History of THAWsoftware
THAWsoftware used to be a developer of free software for the Apple Macintosh. The business was formed in 1994 as a spin-off from the holding corporation AJP and operated as “AJP Software,” commonly abbreviated AJS. With the millenium change in 2000, it was decided to liquidate AJP and re-launch AJS using a new brand – THAWsoftware.
During this entire time, AJS as well as THAWsoftware consisted essentially but of a single person, one Arne Johannessen of Marienheide, Germany. Mainly due to to time constraints on his part, no new software development at all took place after 2003. All products were still continued to be supported even past that time.
It should be obvious however that after such a long period without significant resources put into THAWsoftware’s application development, the products are now no longer in a maintainable state. It is not without some sadness that now, in spring 2007, the continuous development and support of all the software products created by THAWsoftware is declared to be stopped finally, officially and permanently.

Please note that our entire product portfolio is open-source software under the GPL license, or even more free than that. Please do take the code and use it for whatever you like, in accordance with the GPL’s terms. If you come up with something cool, we’d appreciate it very much if you dropped us a line!
So, does this mean THAWsoftware goes poof?
Not exactly.
It is true that we no longer support any of our previously developed applications, nor are in the process of developing new applications under the brand THAWsoftware. However, THAWsoftware’s Arne Johannessen is still working on creating new cool and interoperable software products. Please stay tuned, at some point there’s going to be a surprise..!
So, what do you do now then?
As mentioned of the dedicated page about THAWsoftware, our main business right now is providing technical support for “all things Web.” Specifically:
- we provide consulting services on how to design Web Sites and Web Applications well from a technical point of view
- we make good designs of Web Sites and Web Applications
- we implement our designs, achieving ultimate compatibility by using nothing but Web Standards
- on request, we also provide complete internet services for the technical side of things
